CIRENCESTER, Gloucestershire
A 17th Century German walnut and inlaid Kas, the moulded cornice above a lattice work decorated frieze inscribed with date "1665", over two marquetry and parquetry inlaid doors depicting panels of unicorns and a blind-folded justice with scales in one hand and sword in the other, opening to reveal shelving and ornate cast hinges and lock mechanism, interspersed by ebonised barley-twist pilasters with carved giltwood foliate capitals, over two drawers, raised on turned and ringed bun feet, 196 cm wide x 78 cm deep x 231 cm high

CONDITION REPORTS
Whilst basically sound and of good colour, there is certainly evidence in many areas of old woodworm, both to the barley twist pilasters and the walnut veneers around them and even to the doors. There is discolouration to the doors and certain areas of loss of veneer - see images for detail of this. Whilst the feet look original, it is believed that they are probably in all likelihood replacements. The back boards again look to be original but the vertical slats holding them have had replacement sections in places suggesting that the boards may also have been replaced though they look original. The shelving has signs of old paper suggesting that they may have some age but this cannot be guaranteed for all. The centre section does appear to be original. The Kas is at present a shelved piece rather than for hanging space N.B. shelves not actually set up. Interior depth 53 cm, interior width 165 cm, interior height 148 cm. The side panels appear to be in good condition suggesting that they may possibly be later than the front, though they are not in any way new. The hinges and metalwork appear to be original. Right hand lower hinge cover missing. Over all the piece has a good look and is in basically sound condition though arguably could benefit from further sympathetic restoration
